What goes up, must come down

Monkey has mastered yet another skill. A few weeks ago, he finally realized how to go DOWN stairs, without falling down at least 3 of them. He is actually really good at this now. He can now easily climb up and down, making it much easier on us in the morning and at bedtime. We just say "bedtime" or "naptime" and he goes to the gate and waits for us to open it, climbs the stairs, walks into his room, and stands by his crib. The only problem is he has realized that if he jumps hard enough on the gate, he can get part of it open. The top part opens because he is shaking it so hard, but the bottom stays put (thank God). Heaven help us when he gains some weight and it able to open it on his own.
His other "fun" skill is opening the doors to the basement or garage. I put a gate at the basement stairs since he figured out the childproofing, and didnt appreciate the thought of him falling down a flight of non-carpeted stairs and landing on concrete. The garage is a different story. There is no deadbolt and he thinks he can just walk outside whenever his little heart desires. UGH!!!! We might need another gate. I don't want to be the mom to be reported to Child Protective Services, due to my kid escaping. I have the fear of him escaping while I am going to the bathroom and me looking in the house for him while he is outside running around. CPS would be all over that!!
